Direc tors Jean- Marie Strau b and Danièl e Huillet, who previ ously collabo rated on two other f ilms about music ( The Chronicle of Anna Ma gdalena Bac h, 1968 , and Moses and Aar on, 1975 ), rely on long fixed sh ots in auster e black -and-white s o that the focus remains on the musical bri lliance of S ch?nberg’s aton al score, pe rformed her e by 70 musi cians.
