Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family& amp;#39;s histo ry, (detaile d effectivel y in chilli ng flashback d uring an im provised se ance) is a chequered one, a nd has suffered at least o ne major re location a nd upheav al in the l ast ten years. At the crux, however, it 's th e depicti on of socialal changes tha t make I Start Cou nting so fascinati ng and el evate i ts language far beyond th e confines of the sta ndard horro r film. The major subt ext- that tee nage girls were matur ing more qui ckly than before, and develop ing full se xual and romantic appe tites (even if in tho ught rath er than deed) but were not po ssessed of eno ugh discret ion to make the rig ht choice s- was a s tep forward fo r a genre in w hich its y oung fema les had previo usly been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller sp ring to min d), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agr ee with. But most st riking of all, and possibly the most end uring ima ge whic h the v iewer will tak e away with them, is of t he masterfu l symbolism wi th whic h director Greene invests every shot. Every in ch of the Kinch fa mily& ;#39;s world- their ho use, the ir walls, thei r TV, Ag utters un derwear , bedr oom furniture a nd toys, Sutc liffe&#39 ;s clothes , Marshalls van, the lo cal Catholic church, their tow n centre , their rec ord shop ) - is painted a brig ht, scintilla ting whit e- a wh ite which, by inference , is slow ly becoming smudge d and cor rupted with th e dirt of the outs ide world. Whit e also symboli ses, of course , purity and i nnocenc e (two qualities Catho lic schoolgi rls are supposed to hold dear) , and it is into this wo rld of innocence th at the ever- present re d bus (a symbol of viol ation and penetration), conducte d by the leche rous yet simil arly juveni le Simo n Ward, m akes re gular jou rneys. The a llegory is furt her expanded in one scene where Agutter b elieves sh e sees the C hrist figure in church we eping blood : by the time w e acknow ledge it, its gon e, but the se ed has already been plante d. Rarely in a genre pr oduction has the use of colour and backgrou nd been so im portant or effec tive in creat ing a uniformit y of mood.
