  • Middle class s tudent Bob Let ellier e nters a new world when he meets Alain , a free-thin king rebel who, along wit h his group o f young Parisi ans, has opted for a lif e of instant g ratificat ion instead of work and com mitment . At a p arty, Bob mee ts a yo ung woman , Mic, who appears to be j ust as ca refree and cynical as A lain. Mic&# 39;s only drea m is to o wn a luxury car, and wit h Bob&#39 ;s help, she m anages to find the money to but it. Mic&amp ;#39;s fr iend Cl o disco vers she is p regnant and, not knowi ng who the f ather is, she asks Bob to ma rry her. When they next meet at a party , Bob and Mic deny that the y have any feelings for one anothe r - a declar ation that s oon leads to tr agedy... Ma rcel Car né is wid ely regard ed as one of th e standa rd bearers of F rench qua lity cinema of the 19 30s and 1 940s, respons ible for such mast erpieces as Quai des brumes (19 38) and L es Enfants du Par adis (1945). How ironic th en that, in 1958, towards the e nd of his fi lm-making caree r, he s hould m ake a f ilm which d ared to p ortray t he attitudes and beha viour of the 1950s youth, in a way that eff ectively c aptures the mood and sentim ent of the time. Les Tricheurs was a hugel y controvers ial film, not least becau se of its b latant de piction of adol escent fr ee-love, and w as even banne d in som e regions of F rance. It a lso rec eived some intensely unfa vourable review s, most notably from th e young hotheads on the Cahiers du c inéma su ch as Fran?oi s Truffaut w ho cited this film as a prime exam ple of th e decline of French cinema i nto medioc rity. In spi te of all thi s negative pr ess, the film pr oved to be an astoni shing com mercial success , attract ing fiv e million cin ema-goers, an d was award ed the Grand P rix du Ciné ma fran ?ais in 1958. Whi lst Les Tricheurs is no t as fla wless as Car né' s earlier maste rpieces, i t is nonethele ss a sig nificant work, havin g the power t o both shoc k and move its audience, whilst having great ente rtainment v alue. It evokes the mood of its time in a way that few French f ilms of thi s period d id, depicting young peo ple as p leasure-seeking rebels, rejectin g the a usterity and disciplin e of the pre vious generat ion whilst pu rsuing a life without care s, respon sibilities or love. Sim ilarities w ith James Dean 's f ilms of the 1950s (m ost notably Re bel without a C ause) are app arent, although Carné&#3 9;s treatment o f young peo ple is far more abstr act - in his film they merely sym bolise a wor ld that has lost its way, mo re or less vic tims of pos t-war prospe rity. Although the young people in Les Tricheur s lack th e authenticit y to be tot ally cre dible, th e film do es make an important, and inde ed quite distu rbing p oint, about wher e the permissiv e socie ty may be headin g. Much of th e pleasure of the film is in the performance s from its fou r lead act ors, Jacques Charrier, Pascale Petit, Laurent Terz ieff and Andréa Paris y, although only Terz ieff is reall y convincing in his r ole. Ma rcel Ca rné ori ginally con sidered Alain D elon and Jean-P aul Belmon do for the parts of Bob a nd Alain respecti vely, be fore opting fo r Charrier and Terzie ff. As a consolation , Carn é offered Belmo ndo a smal ler part in the fil m - alas too sm all for the act or to be n oticed b y the publ ic. Belmo ndo&# 39;s breakt hrough had to w ait until the fol lowing ye ar when he starre d in Jean-Lu c Godard& amp;#39;s revolutiona ry A bout de souffle, a film w hich off ers a ver y differe nt pers pective of the yo uth gener ation.
