No rmally t his would be p erfect gibberis h for this Ger man count, but than ks to Herr Eise nstein &a mp;#39;s great ness and directoria l talent, t he hardships of the her oine of the film, Da me Marfa ( Dame Marfa Lapkina ) breached even the thick aristocra tic Schloss wa lls. And that &#3 9;s one of the first remarkabl e aspects of this oeuvre; in spite o f the p olitical subj ect of the fi lm, the p owerful images and ly ricism ( ast onishing an d beautiful sh ot composi tions ), espec ially during the first part of the movie, preserve t he artistic me rits ent irely while se rving a prop aganda p urpose. Th e second rem arkable aspect of the film is the dich otomy b etween the old and new, the figh t to improve the lot o f Dame Marfa and her countrymen . There ar e many discussi ons beca use it is not e asy even in Ru ssia to chan ge ancient an d conservat ive customs . There are superb metap hors and social criticism ( i lliteracy, bu reaucra cy, rel igiosity ) which perf ectly fit the film, and last but not least, &quo t;Staroye I Novoy e", is a kind of archaic doc umentary ab out ancient cus toms est ablishe d deeply i n old Russia , those ones that our heroine m ust fight agai nst. And t here is also a lot a bout agr iculture ( very enlighte ning for this Ge rman count ), esp ecially about harvesting a nd how to fatten Russi an cows or pig s ( literal ly, no p un here… ). He rr Eisen stein had to be ar during t he last era of his fil m career , unbeli evable cen sorship an d mutilat ion of his work, as happens wi th & ;quot;Staro ye I Novoye&a mp;quot;.
