Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the famil y's history, (detailed effe ctively in chil ling flashback during an improvised seance ) is a cheque red one, an d has suffered at leas t one majo r relocation an d upheaval i n the last te n years. A t the crux, however, it&a mp;#39;s the d epiction of soc ialal changes that make I S tart Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far bey ond the conf ines of t he standard horror film. The major subtext - that teena ge girls were maturing mor e quickly t han before , and deve loping full sex ual and romantic ap petites (ev en if in t hought rather than dee d) but were no t posse ssed of enough discret ion to make the right ch oices- was a s tep forward for a genre in which its y oung females h ad previousl y been p ortraye d as bimb o victims (Cover Gi rl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), bu t not one that all viewe rs would nece ssarily a gree with. B ut most striki ng of all , and possib ly the most e nduring image w hich the v iewer will tak e away with t hem, is of th e masterfu l symbolism with which director Green e invest s every sh ot. Every inc h of the Ki nch family &#39 ;s world - their hou se, thei r walls, th eir TV, Agut ters underwear , bedroom f urniture and toys, Sutc liffe&am p;#39;s c lothes, M arshalls v an, th e local Catho lic church, their town centre, t heir re cord sh op) - is painted a br ight, scintil lating white- a w hite which, b y infer ence, is sl owly be coming smudged and cor rupted with the dirt of th e outside wor ld. White also symbolises, of cour se, purity and in nocence (two qualities Catholic school girls are su pposed to hold dear), and it is into t his worl d of innoc ence that the e ver-pre sent red bus (a symbol of violati on and penetr ation), conduc ted by the lecherous yet similarl y juvenile Si mon Ward, make s regular journeys. T he allegory is further exp anded i n one scene wh ere Agutte r believ es she se es the Ch rist figure i n church weepin g blood: b y the time we a cknowled ge it, its go ne, but the seed has alre ady been plante d. Rarely in a genre produ ction has the use o f colour and background been so important or effec tive in creating a unif ormity of mood.
