The mo vie star s Todd as a recently widowed missio nary returning to her home in Engla nd from Jamaica. Durin g the voyag e, she meets Milland, a charmi ng though dangerou s rascal who is wanted by police in co nnection with so me unsavory dea lings. Mill and contracts malaria whi le onboard the ship and Todd nurses him b ack to h ealth. In Lond on, Tod d settle s into her h ome, takin g in boarders t o make end s meet. M illand arrives , moves in , and procla ims his lo ve for her. Todd is thri lled, but it seems rathe r obvious t hat Milland is only toyin g with her. Milland finds some let ters written to her by her fri end, Fitzge rald, in whic h Fitzgera ld reve als some of h er sexual ind iscretions. Since Fitzger ald is now mar ried to the wea lthy Hu ntley, Milla nd believes he can us e the lett ers to blackmail Fit zgerald. Todd& amp;#39;s love for Mill and is so great that s he goes along w ith the pl an. Huntley, h owever, learns of the scheme and also un covers details of Mill and's shady pas t. Fearin g for her lover& ;#39;s safety, Todd poisons H untley, then r emains silent when Fitzgera ld is arres ted for the mu rder. Milland has by now g enuinely fall en in love with Todd an d the two mak e plans t o leave England . Befor e they c an depart, one of Mil land& ;#39;s former lovers shows u p and T odd, in a jea lous ra ge, kills M illand, then t urns herself into the polic e. This is an intriguing film , although a l ittle on the talky side. The performa nces are excel lent th roughout, wi th Mill and shin ing as th e cad, the type of role in whi ch he exc elled. Though h e spent m ost of his t ime mak ing fil ms in the US, he occasi onally r eturned to his nati ve England fo r a producti on and this was his fi rst British film s ince FREN CH WITHOUT TEARS in 193 9. Directo r Allen was a lso an Eng lishman who c hose to work i n the U S, this being his fir st directo rial effort i n his h omeland.
