The pla y itself is a loose retell ing of the bibl ical st ory of King Her od and hi s execution of John the Baptist (her e, as in Wilde&#3 9;s play, called Jokaanan) at the r equest of his ste pdaughter, Sa lomé, whom h e lusts a fter. Salomé is often called one of the first art films to be made in the U.S.[c itation ne eded] The hi ghly stylized costumes, exaggerated ac ting (even for the period), minimal sets, and a bsence of all but the mo st necessary pr ops make for a scr een image m uch more focus ed on atmosp here and on co nveying a s ense of the characters&am p;#39; ind ividual heightened d esires than on conventional plot develo pment. D espite t he film bei ng only a littl e over an ho ur in length a nd having n o real action to speak o f, it cost ove r $350, 00 0 to make . All the sets were co nstructed indo ors to b e able to ha ve comp lete control over the l ighting. The fi lm was sho t complete ly in bla ck and wh ite, matchin g the illus trations done by Aub rey Beards ley in the pri nted edition of Wild e's p lay. The costum es, designed b y Natacha Ram bova, use d material only from Mai son Lewis of Paris, su ch as t he real silver lamé l oincloth s worn by the g uards. No major studio would be associated with the f ilm, and i t was years aft er its co mpletion b efore it was released, by a minor independent distributo r. It wa s a comple te failure at t he time and marked th e end of Nazimova&# 39;s producing career. A lon gstanding rum or, which se ems to have start ed whil e the f ilm was s till in produc tion, suggests that its cast is compris ed entir ely of gay an d bisexual actors in an homage to Os car Wil de, as per star and pro ducer Na zimova&#39 ;s demand. I t is, of co urse, imp ossible to sa y, but one of the extras in Salomé reported that a number of the cast me mbers—both feat ured and extras —were indeed ga y, but not an unus ual percentage of them, and certain ly not al l of them. Wh at can be said is that Naz imova herself was a lesbia n, the two gu ard characters (who, next to Salo mé, have t he most sc reen time) are at least playe d very stereoty pically gay, and se veral of the female courtiers are m en in drag. Sal omé was screen ed in 1989 at the Ne w York Intern ational Festi val of Lesbi an and Gay films and in 1990 at the N ew York Gay Exp erimental Film Festival. In 2000 , the Uni ted Stat es Libr ary of Congres s deemed the fi lm & ;quot;cultur ally significan t&quo t; and sele cted it for p reservation in the Na tional F ilm Registr y.详情
