The developm ent and the gr owth of t he pattern of church archite cture is sho wn. Dreyer in t his film shows a series of churches f rom different periods with churc hgoers i n period clothi ng. Each period is se parated by a sh ot of a c hurch bell double-exp osed on th e sky. Althoug h the film has a vibran t and ins tructiv e way of com municatin g the diff erent epo chs and style s to students, it do es not e xhibit t he artistic q uality t hat usually dis tinguishes a Dreyer film, except pe rhaps in some o f the co stumes, which were origin ally made for Da y of Wrat h. Dreyer wo uld rewor k the script th at was written b y editor and folk high-scho ol principal Be rnhard Jensen, aided by a c ommittee of exp erts consis ting of arch itect H . L?nbo rg-Jensen and Vict or Hermanse n, cur ator at the National Museum of Denm ark. Dreyer h ad a first draft ready in mid-Mar ch, entitl ed Kirken e r et gamme lt Hus (& ;quot;The Chu rch Is an Old Ho use"), which was distribut ed to the mem bers of the committ ee for their co mments. In the last ha lf of July, D reyer a nd Victor Hermansen tra velled the co untry to l ook at suitab le churches. They res earched the de tails and at Dr eyer’s request a number of technical c hanges were ma de to t he churc hes, includ ing the rem oval of porcel ain holde rs for electrical w iring in Tv eje Merl?se Ch urch. On 4 Jul y, Drey er went in advanc e to Ringk?bi ng. Shooting w as set to start a f ew days later wi th the arrival of the dire ctor of p hotography, Preben Frank , who had fallen off a ladder and br oken his le g, Fort unately , he wa s ready to c autious ly start wo rking again wit hin a few days, with his leg in a cast. Otherwis e, the pro duction went without a glitch. Eve rywhere, Dre yer said, they were well rec eived at th e vicarages an d they had no problem getting enough extras. On 1 august, the y return ed to Copen hagen with almost a ll their foo tage in the can . They only needed t o film the church i n Skelby, wh ere the weather had been against them, plus a Swedish woo den church in Hedared. The economy was distre ssed so soon after the war, especially w hen it came t o foreign c urrency, but ther e were no real wooden ch urches left in Denmark and buildin g an int erior set in the studio would be too expensive. The finishe d film was sho wn for the first time o n 24 Septemb er 1947 to a small , closed c ircle, whic h include d the Minist er for Eccle siastical Affairs. I n December 1947, as was Dansk Kult urfilm’s stand ard practi ce, th e film wa s presented to the press, p oliticians and others o n a progr amme with four ot her shor t films.详情
